“Khachaturian; Winter Tales Ballet ” written and directed by Narine Petrossian is a two act theatrical ballet. It is composed on Aram Khachatuian’s classical suits: “Macbeth” written (1934, 1955), “The Widow from Valencia” written (1940), “Masquerade” written (1941), “King Lear” written (1958).

The ballet is set on New Year’s Eve of 1991 with a young girl aged 12 eager to receive her New Year gifts. Her family, consisting of a single mother, a grandmother, an uncle and an aunt, gather round to celebrate a New Years Eve together. As the story develops, she witnesses one of the most historical New Years of her generation following the Collapse of Soviet Union and the beginning of the independent state of Armenia. Watching the New Year Countdown on TV, she rushes to unwrap her presents under the tree. As she unravels the gifts she discovers four books titled: Macbeth, The Window form Valencia, Masquerade and King Lear, all from well known playwrights.

The first and second act revolve around guests coming to wish the family Happy New Year, as is the tradition in Armenia. With every New Year day, the girl opens one of the books and starts imagining the stories. The guests who come to the house to wish the family a new prosperous year become characters of the stories she reads and imagines. Each story are dances to the music written by Khachaturian for each particular play. The girl, a representative of the post-Soviet era, for the first time discovers the masterpieces of the world. These 4 great literary works finally receive a delightful ballet showcase allegorical to the real-life events that unfolded during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
